MAUPITI
The small tranquil island of Maupiti, 40 km. (25 miles) west of Bora Bora is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the South Seas. The main island is surrounded by a sparkling lagoon, with long motu islet off-shore, providing coral gardens for watermelon and cantaloupe plantations, as well as white grounds. accommodations are available in pensions on motu islets and in houses in the main village.
Activities include a 3 hour walking tour of Maupiti, visits to the archeological sites, boat excursions to various islets, with picnic lunch, paddling outrigger canoes, or fishing in the lagoon and pass for lobster and fish. Removed from the world of mass tourism, Maupiti welcomes its visitors rather shyly, and with a genuine warmth.
